TFWA WORLD EXHIBITION & CONFERENCE 2015 CONCLUDES AFTER A SUCCESSFUL WEEK

TFWA World Exhibition & Conference closed today in Cannes on a positive note with evidence of high levels of exhibitor and visitor satisfaction and very pleasing attendance figures.

“There has been a tremendous buzz around the exhibition this year in spite of the difficulties prior to the event both in Cannes itself and in the industry as a whole,” commented Erik Juul-Mortensen, TFWA President. “The fact that TFWA World Exhibition & Conference opened on schedule just two weeks after the appalling flooding in the city, with virtually all facilities in the Palais des Festivals and at our other venues provided as planned, is testament to the hard work and commitment of all our partners in the city.

“The slight reduction in the total number of visitors compared with last year’s record figure bears witness to the difficult economic and geopolitical climate in the world today. However, I am delighted to report that our key visitor category – landlords, duty free & travel retail operators – was extremely well represented with a 2% increase in delegates and 4% rise in the number of companies over 2014. Agents and distributors also arrived in greater numbers than last year, which is very pleasing.”

A total of 6,558 visitors from 3,026 companies attended TFWA World Exhibition & Conference 2015, which ran from Sunday 18th to Friday 23rd October, compared with 6,701 visitors (-2%) from 3,105 companies (-3%) last year.

Of the total, 2,183 people (33%) were key buyers - duty free & travel retail operators and landlords of airports, airlines, ferry, cruise, border and downtown concerns - up +2% on the previous year’s figure of 2,132, from 643 companies vs 618 in 2014 (+4%).

Adding the 2,401 agents and distributors (1,145 companies) to this figure produces a total of 4,584 (1,788 companies) of the most influential trade executives in the industry who were present at this year’s event.

On the 21,500 m2 trade floor were 482 exhibitors (475 in 2014), including eight luxury yachts in the Harbour Village, 48 of them new or returning after an absence. Between them they showcased thousands of products in the fragrances & cosmetics, wines & spirits, fashion & accessories, jewellery & watches, confectionery & fine food, gifts & electronics and tobacco categories.

The TFWA World Conference, which set the scene on Monday 18th October, attracted 1,504 delegates, who were rewarded for their early start with thought-provoking analysis of the current business environment from the three speakers - Rudi Giuliani, former New York Mayor, Peter Long, CEO TUI Group and Erik Juul-Mortensen, President TFWA - under the watchful eye of moderator Stephen Sackur, BBC HARDtalk.

145 delegates turned out at first light on Tuesday 20th for the Market Watch Workshop on South Korea, 169 attended the Inflight Focus workshop on Wednesday and nearly 90 stayed on after a busy day at the show that evening for the first-ever TFWA Research Workshop.

Networking is always a priority at this annual summit for the global duty free & travel retail industry. In spite of the rain, 140 sporty delegates took part in the TFWA Charity Run on Sunday 18th, each of whom donated 15 euros to the good causes supported by TFWA Care.

The charitable Heinemann/Estee Lauder Golf Tournament was keenly contested by nearly 100 players and, across the city, 87 delegates defended their honour in the annual TFWA Petanque Tournament.

Nearly 2,000 guests donned party attire for the ever-popular Welcoming Cocktail at the Carlton Hotel on Sunday evening with fabulous fireworks organised by the City of Cannes. The Scene after-hours venue at La Gare Maritime was packed with revellers each weekday evening, chatting and dancing to music mixed by some of the best DJs on the Côte d’Azur.

The dazzling climax of the social agenda for over 1,000 guests was Le Premium Evening at Port Canto on Thursday 22nd with an elegant ‘Cucina Pop’ dinner prepared by award-winning chef Davide Oldani and a scintillating acrobatic display by the Cirque Eloize from Montreal.

At the closing press conference, Erik Juul-Mortensen was delighted on behalf of TFWA Care to present to M. Christophe Visentin, Founding Director, and M. Bernard Brochand, Deputy & Honorary President of SAMU SOCIAL, which provides assistance to homeless people, funds which will be used to purchase a service vehicle. The van will replace one originally purchased by TFWA ten years ago which was destroyed in the recent flooding.

Erik Juul-Mortensen concluded, “TFWA is pleased to report that the 31st TFWA World Exhibition & Conference has been completed successfully. Initial feedback from visitors and exhibitors has been very positive and we will endeavour to rectify any issues which have come to light in time for next year. We look forward to meeting colleagues at our next industry event, the MEADFA Conference in Jordan, on 23 and 24 November.”

Shiseido Executes rejuvenation of SHISEIDO Brand Based on Empathy to Establish Itself as a Global Marketing Company from Japan

OCTOBER 2015. Commencing in January 2016, SHISEIDO—currently available in 88 countries and regions* around the world—will undergo a comprehensive brand innovation. To reinforce its role as a global marketing company, the Shiseido group established its mid-to-long-term plan VISION 2020 and is now executing a rebuilding of brand value, in which SHISEIDO holds an integral position. Driven by a belief in beauty as a positive force in the world and with “empathy” serving as a guiding keyword, SHISEIDO is set to renovate its communication and to further expand touch points with its consumers.

Within this brand innovation, Global Travel Retail (GTR) will play a key role in re-establishing Shiseido as one of the world’s leading cosmetic and skincare brands. The company has pledged its commitment to GTR with a promise to focus on exclusive and travel-specific sized products designed to meet the needs of travelling consumers and has recently appointed a dedicated Global Travel Retail team based in Singapore.

Shiseido New Advertising Visual

Concrete innovation actions

To inspire empathy among consumers around the world, SHISEIDO is set for a sequential overhaul of its products, advertising visuals, models, store counters, brand logo and other aspects of communication commencing in January 2016. To express the elements of contemporary Japan fundamental to SHISEIDO from a global perspective, the brand has appointed Ruba Abu-Nimah, who has a diverse background in the global prestige market – including working in New York and Paris and receiving multiple design awards - to serve as its new Creative Director.

Products

To make them more comprehensible to consumers, the respective roles of the brand’s products have been redefined according to four different approaches: Defend, Regenerate, Reveal, and Express. The first stage of this restructuring will be represented by ULTIMUNE (launched full-scale in September 2014), designed to defend the beauty of skin, and a new foundation (set for sequential launch after March 2016), which serves to reveal beauty. Ease of product comprehension is seen as particularly important for the travel retail sector where consumers are often under time pressure and these new approaches are expected to help convert browsers to buyers. Understanding the requirement for exclusive offers in this sector, Shiseido has already created a Jumbo ULTIMUNE and will add a limited edition duo pack next year whilst continuing to develop other presentations specifically aimed at travellers.

Advertising visuals and models

SHISEIDO’s core product ULTIMUNE and the new foundation will mark the first stage of the brand’s renewed advertising visuals that will be used in points of sale, magazines, SNS, brand sites and other platforms including a strong presence within the travel retail trade media and at the forthcoming TFWA World Exhibition. With the purpose of inspiring empathy among consumers on a global scale, SHISEIDO has chosen three new models who embody inner beauty, and the new visuals express a strong message celebrating the diversity of beauty. The model visuals were shot by internationally active photographer Mario Sorrenti.

This is a simulated layout. Actual photograph will be available from 18 October onwards. Please send your request directly through to the travel retail media contact person.

SHISEIDO Travel Retail Counters

New travel retail counters will be introduced to provide consistency with a global new look for the brand’s department store counters. These will feature red lines over a white base, expressing a sense of modern minimalism whilst at the same time as communicating richness and warmth, along with a camellia shaped icon to function as a guiding sign. In addition, special merchandising units for travel retail will be developed to meet varying retail space requirements. Overall, the new look expresses a modern interpretation of the Japanese concept of Ichigo Ichié, which involves treasuring every meeting as it will never recur.

Brand logo

”GINZA” and “TOKYO”, representing the heart of SHISEIDO, have been added to the logo to create a new story and a new future for the brand. Ginza is a popular upscale area of Tokyo, recognized by many as one of the most luxurious shopping districts in the world, with a long history that in many ways reflects the ambition of Shiseido Group to rejuvenate and innovate.

The philosophy and goal of the brand innovation

In the modern age characterized by rapid change, urbanization and globalization, beauty invests people with the strength to deal with a range of issues and becomes the very power to live by, at the same time functioning as a connecting force that joins people together. SHISEIDO believes that empathy is born when people recognize the diversity of beauty, respect the beauty present in one another, and realize the infinite nature of beauty.

Stretching back to the very birth of the brand, SHISEIDO has an extensive history of amalgamating cutting-edge technology with art to bring out the beauty innately present in consumers, and this promise to consumers exists to this day. SHISEIDO believes that the beauty it produces in various forms inspires and enforces empathy, and that it can be a positive force in the world. The brand innovation that lies ahead will involve an amplified communication of this message of beauty.

ABOUT SHISEIDO GROUP AND ITS TRAVEL RETAIL BUSINESS

Shiseido was founded in 1872 as the first Western-style pharmacy in Japan. The business gradually evolved into a cosmetics company, offering people the most advanced technology and the finest aesthetics available in the East or the West.  Now known globally as the premier cosmetics company with roots in Japan, the name Shiseido has come to represent the world’s highest standards of quality.
Shiseido’s global selection of skincare, makeup and fragrance includes a high-performance category for special skincare, and a brightening line. Shiseido also offers body care, suncare and a skincare line for men. Fiercely contemporary and innovative after over 140 years in business, today Shiseido Group brands (including SHISEIDO, Clé de Peau Beauté, NARS, bareEssentials, Auprès, fragrance brands including ISSEY MIYAKE and narciso rodriguez) are now sold in over 120 countries and regions.

In 2015 Shiseido Group has repeatedly underlined its commitment to accelerating multi-brand growth within the travel retail channel. As part of this strategy, the company has divided the world into six regions, with Travel Retail classed as a territory in its own right. The move is associated with the Group’s Vision 2020 plan, spearheaded by President Masahiko Uotani, where this key ‘region’ has established its Global Travel Retail headquarters in Singapore. Under this structure, the company will practice a "Think Global, Act Local" strategy focused on cultivating each brand based on region and market-specific needs, while also accelerating decision-making and production development in its own area.

SHOTKA – TASTE THE WILD

Marie Brizard Wine & Spirits launches ‘bold and daring’ SHOTKA to travel retail

SHOTKA is the new stand-out brand launch from Marie Brizard Wine & Spirits. Being shown to travel retail buyers for the first time at TFWA World Exhibition (Yellow Village E32 ) SHOTKA is a premium, cannabis flavoured vodka with a bold and daring approach targeted at rebellious night-clubbing fans. Without the narcotic effects of this most hotly debated drug (also known as marijuana) SHOTKA stands out with its unique and unexpected taste.

A perfect cocktail ingredient shot, SHOTKA is targeted at the intersection of two core groups ”fun seekers” aged LDA* (18) - 24 and ”impulse actives” aged LDA (18) - 28, together with the ”upbeat home” and ”upbeat out” occasions.

First launched in Spain during Summer 2015 in a strategic partnership with Matinée Group, one of the most prestigious nightlife companies in the world, SHOTKA is the focus of a targeted activation program that will run until the end of next year.

The Matinée Group’s Circuit Festival included a SHOTKA video teaser by the famous Rossy de Palma, best known for her roles in Almodóvar films, while some 600 SHOTKA parties will be held in and around Barcelona, Sitges, Ibiza and Madrid by the end of 2016. This forms part of an initial roll-out plan that includes US, Canada, Poland, Denmark, Bulgaria, France, Lithuania, Estonia, Georgia and Ukraine.

Parties feature daring promotional games, supported by extensive social media activations via Instagram; Facebook groups and other online social media and blogs.

Says Kevin Baker, GTR Director for MBWS: “Having been to several SHOTKA parties this summer, I can see that this brand and its activation is perfect for the airports serving the major resorts where  our target customer goes to party. There are some retailers for whom this may be too daring and challenging as a brand concept, whilst the more progressive will embrace its potential. Travel retail buyers are constantly calling for brands that are different – SHOTKA most certainly fits the bill!”

Packaging offers high shelf stand-out visibility with a silver opaque one litre bottle for travel retail (700ml on domestic) with a dragon-style motif and the words “Promise you won’t shoot me down if I ask your name. Let’s dance first. Call us Mary & Jane. SHOTKA” in black and green. “It’s an incredibly provocative design - stylishly hypnotising; definitely one of the only products of its kind on the market,” continues Baker.

THE IDEA BEHIND SHOTKA
History is often repeated. Yesterday’s successful inventions are declared traditional today and will be known as the standard tomorrow. The world of spirit drinks is full of old traditions, strict standards and wonderful myths – about “real” origins, scientific “optimal” strength/proof, “the most suitable” taste or the “best” ways to consume.
SHOTKA was born from an idea, not tradition. “The idea is to create a wonderful and unique drink regardless of all preconceptions,” says the company. “SHOTKA is not traditional, it is the expression of an idea. An idea that an individual’s point of view, that does not conform, is considered a virtue.
“SHOTKA is like a rebellious individual in a crowd of ordinary drinks. It creates the sense that one can take risks, be disobedient, cross the line and dare to be different. We want to be differentiated from other drinks. We want to be understood as SHOTKA itself, because of the moments when, where and how this product is used.”

ALL SET FOR TFWA WORLD EXHIBITION & CONFERENCE 2015

The TFWA executive team is now in Cannes supervising the final preparations for TFWA World Exhibition & Conference which will be staged in the Palais des Festivals et des Congrès from 18th to 23rd October.

With virtually all the damage caused by the recent severe flooding now cleared away, TFWA is pleased to report that the build-up of the event is proceeding according to schedule and that all venues will be used as planned.

Erik Juul-Mortensen, President TFWA commented, “The Board and management of TFWA have been very impressed by the speed and efficiency of our partners and the authorities in Cannes during the clean-up process following the extraordinary deluge and subsequent flooding in the city ten days ago. The MIPCOM show which precedes TFWA World Exhibition & Conference took place as planned last week without any major problems.

“There remain one or two issues, including the reconnection of some France Telecom landline services to certain hotels and restaurants, but we are advised that these will be resolved this week. The services in the Palais, including the internet facility, are working normally and we are looking forward to a busy and productive week.”

Further details on all aspects of the show, on-site registration information and other details can be found at www.tfwa.com.

MITR focuses on blockbuster brands at TFWA World Exhibition with exciting new innovations

October 2015. Colourful confectionery company Mars International Travel Retail (MITR) comes to TFWA World Exhibition (Bay Village, Stand B9) with a range of new, exciting innovations and products as it continues to focus on busting the barriers to penetration in the category.

Having successfully launched its Category Vision last year, MITR has taken the next step with the introduction of its three ‘Laws of Growth’, which focuses on blockbuster brands, converting light buyers and triggering emotional responses.

MITR’s General Manager, Craig Sargeant comments, “The Laws of Growth have taught us that category growth will come from converting light buyers – those that only buy 1-2 times a year, rather than targeting those travellers that buy constantly. Combining this with our knowledge of the barriers to purchase - buyers not being able to quickly find the items they want or faced with irrelevant items for their requirements- we clearly do not need a huge range or abundant choice. What we need is the big blockbuster brands in the right format, clear displays and exciting activations.

“As a result of this we have dramatically reduced our SKUs by more than a half to ensure that all the products we sell serve each of the different need states. New product development will, of course, continue to be a vital part of our strategy. Offering exciting, new, travel retail exclusive products is key in this market and so our focus for Cannes this year is introducing formats which will support the Laws of Growth strategy.”

New for this year:

M&M’S Peanut Miniatures sharing box 10x20g- Ideal for sharing and gifting, available in red, yellow, green and blue characters. 260g boxes are also available in Mars, Twix and Snickers.

Skittles Stand Up Pouch – 18x 26g bags.
Skittles Tube – 165g – Travel Retail Exclusive, the perfect snacking companion.

Extra 46pc Bottle – Spearmint, Peppermint and White Sweet Mint.

Extra 8 Pack – The perfect shelf sales item – oral care on the go.

Activations will continue to play a key role in 2016 for MITR; based around colourful, fun and relevant blockbuster promotions, which aim to attract lighter buyers. These include:

M&M’S Towels GWP – Buy 3 MAXI pouches and receive a free towel. Each towel comes with an M&M’s character and a card with a funny quote to match the character. The activation will be supported by large promotional areas and POS material.

M&M’S Phone Case– Buy 2x M&M’S MAXI pouches and receive a free M&M’S character phone case.

M&M’S Luggage Strap – Buy 2x M&M’S MAXI pouches and receive a free M&M’S branded luggage strap.

Snicker Mini Football – Buy 2 MINI pouches of Snickers, Mars, Bounty, Milky Way or Twix and receive a free GWP American Football.

2016 will also see MITR update its M&Ms, Snickers and Galaxy displays to create an ultra-distinctive look which makes it as easy as possible for travellers to see what is on offer - as only 3 to 4 SKUs will be displayed per unit.

Divided into different need states, the new units will allow MITR’s customers to build their own individual displays based on locally preferred blockbuster brands – tending to regional requirements. Sargeant continues, “Our new displays are a vital part of our new strategy to convert lighter buyers. Being able to quickly and easily find a favourite brand on a display unit eliminates one barrier to purchase, which is a step in the right direction to increase category sales.”
